This past weekend, my husband was coming home from a work trip. He was gone for 2 weeks. The kids had driven me crazy and if you ask them they would probably say the same about me. With my husband’s return, there was light at the end of the tunnel. I made plans next day to go out alone for mani-pedi, maybe even get a hot cuppa of peppermint mocha that has made its way to Starbucks. Peace, alone time and simple joy of drinking coffee hot.

With those happy thoughts, I decided to cook something nice for dinner. A time to transition from “solo parenting” to “my lone time is coming”. Fish always features on nice dinner menu for me and I was glad to have some on hand.

The reality of making a coconut fish curry seemed too much. I wanted something quick and easy. Luckily I also had Shan Fried Fish masala packet on hand. On a whim, I decided to follow the recipe that came on the box.

Fish, Oil to fry, Garlic paste and Shan masala. That’s it. Luckily garlic and oil are pantry staples so I could get started immediately.

When I opened the Fish Mix pack, I was pleasantly surprised to see real whole spices and not some generic red powder. I quickly minced 4-6 garlic pods, added that and a tablespoon oil to the fish along with ½ packet of Shan Fish Mix, and then left it to marinate for 2-3 hours before frying.

The results were delish. With some lemon juice and sliced red onion it was an easy appetizer for our dinner. The recipe called for deep-frying the fish in 2 cups of oil – which was the only change I made. I shallow fried in maybe ½ cup of oil. 2 – 3cups of oils seems very extravagant in urban kitchen’s, but I don’t think it had any impact on the taste.

It was a bit too spicy for my American kids but even they had it with plenty of water. It was devoured in no time. Since then I have made it again, the simplicity and ease can’t be beat. I am really glad I gave the recipe a try. Shan Fish Mix can be used to make shrimp curry as well – which I hope to try next. Give it a try and let us know how you like it.

Shan Fried Fish Recipe

  • Firm White fish fillet – 2 Lbs (Sole or Tilapia )
  • Garlic paste – 2 Tbsp. ( Or freshly minced 4-6 garlic pods)
  • 1 Packet Shan Fried Fish Mix
  • ½ cup oil (for frying)
  • Lemon wedges
  • Sliced red onions

  1. Take fish fillets in a bowl. Add 1 Tbsp oil and garlic paste along with Shan Fried Fish Mix. Mix it into a paste and marinade the fish in this paste for 2-3 hrs.
  2. Heat oil in a shallow pan. Once it is hot, fry fish one at a time, exercising caution around hot oil, till it is brown and crisp on each side – about 2 -3 mins on each side depending on how large the fillet is.

Serve hot with lemon wedges and onions.
