It is Food Allergy Awareness Week from May 8-May 16, 2016. We speak to author Priyanka Talwar about food allergies and what prompted her to write the book ‘You Can’t Always Tell‘! Hear her speak to Preethi, read the review to the book and enter the giveaway as well!
We often overlook allergies as minor irritants. It’s like every other kid seems to be having some allergy or the other. However the sad truth is that kids are allergic to all sort of things. What is important that we identify what the kid is allergic too. But what is more important or perhaps the most important, is that we need to ensure the kid is aware of what he or she is allergic to.
A wonderful book came our way ‘You Can’t Always Tell’ by Priyanka Talwar and wonderfully illustrated by Ruchi Mhasane which talks about allergies from a child’s perspective. Neil is allergic to nuts. He goes to his friend Maya’s house. While they are having fun, Maya’s friend Katie comes with some yummy gooey chocolate cup cakes. While Maya has them, Neil refuses saying he has allergies and ‘You Can’t Always Tell‘, what contains what products without an adult telling us about it. But Katie and Maya insist he has them. Does Neil succumb to eating it? What happens when he gets an allergy attack? Does he actually get an allergy attack at all? Why is he bugged with Katie and Maya?
The story not only talks about allergies but it also teaches in a subtle manner about treating friends the right way and also teaches kids about self-control.
The book treats the issue of allergies in a very matter of factly manner taking a very day-to-day situation and converting into a story which kids can relate to instantly. The story not only talks about allergies but it also teaches in a subtle manner about treating friends the right way and also teaches kids about self-control. A child gets inspired to learn about whether he or she has any allergies and how he or she can tackle it.
A lovely read which tells us that despite allergies we all can lead normal lives. A bit of care and self-control is all that is needed 🙂
